Open House

Dear Parents,

It is time for Open House. Briargrove Elementary is striving for 100% attendance at Open House. For third grade our Open House is Tuesday, September 9 at 7:00 pm.

Our class really wants to reach the 100% attendance level, and you can help by showing up on Tuesday the 9th to visit with your child’s teachers. You will have the opportunity to learn about our conduct system, homework, Wednesday folders, and more about what we teach (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, Language Arts).

More information will be going home in the Wednesday folders. Thanks.

Mrs. Sawyer

Surgery

I wanted to make sure that everyone saw the purple letter I sent home today. Here it is below.

August 29, 2008
Dear Parents,
I am writing to inform you I will be out from Wednesday, September 10-September 19, planning to return Monday, September 22. Unfortunately, I am having surgery that wasn’t able to be scheduled over the summer.

I want to assure you your child will be in good hands. All lessons will be prepared by me. Ms. Linda Kane will be substituting for me September 10-September 12. Mrs. Sharyn Bronstein (who happens to be my mother and a certified teacher) will be your child’s teacher for the remainder of my absence.

If you have any concerns or questions please contact me at jbronste@houstonisd.org until September 9. After September 10, please contact Renee McGah or Lea Melville.

An Amazing First Day of School

I had a wonderful day with my new group of students. It is always so interesting to hear children talk about their lives, they are always so dramatic. We spent about 45 minutes today talking about mutual respect and how it applies to teachers, other students, property of other students, the school and in the cafeteria. We spent time discussing why mutual respect is so important and how we can use it in all the different areas of the school.

We did some get to know you activities. I did find out that my students have a lot of pets also. I always love seeing pictures of animals, so feel free to send them in.

I hope you have will have a chance to go through the Wednesday folder this evening. I know there is a lot in there (sorry for that). Please return as soon as possible:

  • Pink student information sheet

  • Reduced lunch program (if necessary)

  • Employment survey (optional)

  • Enrollment Card

  • About your child (you may use the index card provided or email me a response)

  • Welcome letter needs to be signed (yellow copy needs to returned, white copy in back of folder is yours to keep)

  • Code of Conduct (I put a posted note on the sheet I need back, you keep the book. Just fill out the yellow highlighted parts)

I think that is everything, please feel free to write me if you have any questions at jbronste@houstonisd.org

I can't wait for another wonderful & exciting day! Mrs. Sawyer

Welcome Letter

This is the welcome letter that will be coming home with your child on Monday, August 25th. I am sending home a yellow copy (please sign and return) and a white copy for your to keep.

Dear Parents,

We would like to welcome you and your child to third grade. This year is an important step for your child's education. We have many wonderful activities and challenges planned for the students this year.

The following useful information will help the school year start off smoothly at home and at school:

Curriculum: Your child will have two teachers this year. Ms. Melville teaches Language Arts, Reading, Spelling, and Handwriting. Mrs. Sawyer teaches Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Arrival: The first bell rings at 7:45. The children will have this time in the classroom to get their belongings put away, sharpen their pencils, and use the restroom. Work begins promptly at 8:00 when the tardy bell rings.

Dismissal: Bus riders are dismissed at 2:50 to the playground side of the school. Students, who have carpool numbers for the front or back entrances, are dismissed at 2:55 to go to their carpool places. If you need to make a change to your child's after-school arrangements, or if your child will be going home with a friend for one day, please send us a note signed by a parent. Otherwise, we will dismiss your child according to your written carpool instructions.

Health: No medications, including over the counter drugs, such as cough drops, are allowed in the classrooms. Teachers cannot adminster medication under any circumstances. Please see the school nurse when a medication is needed during school hours.

Absences/Tardies: Children who are absent or tardy must bring a note from home the next day stating the reason for their absence so we may count the absence as excused. These notes must be received with 3 days. If your child needs to leave school early, please send a note in the morning so we can have your child ready when the office calls.

Conferences: Conferences may be scheduled whenever there is a need for one. Our conference times are from 10:00-10:30 on Mondays and Thursday. Please send a note or call the office to schedule a conference.

Homework: Homework will be assigned daily-Monday through Thursday, with occassional home projects which may entail a weekend. Incomplete class work will be expected to be completed in the evenings. Assignments are recorded in a homework packet for both of our classes. Homework will be coming home in a red folder, and will be a tool used to reinforce skills being taught in the classroom.

Graded Papers: Your child's graded papers will come home every Wednesday in a blue folder. You will need to go over the papers with your child and sign where indicated. Write us a note if you have any concerns or question your child's understanding of a concept. Happy notes to us are also welcomed. The Briargrove Buzz and other school communications will also be included in the blue folder.

Wednesday folders: The Wednesday folder is our way of staying in communication with you and is vitally important to us. We need the folder returned on Thursday's unless you have written us a note or spoken with us about the need for more time to review work. Thanks for your active involvement in this process.

Conduct: Your child's conduct is kept in the classroom on a daily basis. Each Wednesday, you will be receiving information regarding his/her conduct. We will need you to sign where we highlight to let us know you have reviewed our comments or the grade and discussed the week's events with him/her. If there is a serious situation which occurs, we will be in immediate contact. Otherwise, please look on the conduct sheet in the prongs to see the conduct grade. If you have any further concerns, please do contact us.

Daily Schedule: A daily schedule is attached to this letter.

Lunch and Snacks: Our lunch time will be from 11:55-12:25. You are always welcome to join your child for lunch. In fact, we encourage this. Please be advised that according to school policy, your child may ask only one other child to join him/her to eat out on the patio with you. (We ask that you not allow your child and friend to play on the recess equipment after your lunch together, as we as a school are worried about numbers out on the playground already.) Otherwise, you are welcome to join your child for lunch with the class at the table. Prepaid lunch cards, a convenient way to take care of lunch purchases, can be paid for any morning before school in the front office.

Your child may bring a small, healthy snack to eat midmorning, such as fruit, raisins, nuts, trail mix, carrot sticks, crackers, a half sandwich, etc. Cookies, candy or potato chips are inappropriate. No soda is allowed, although your child is encouraged to bring a bottle of water if desired.

Cell phones: Students are not permitted to use their cell phones during the school day (7:15 AM-4:00 PM). If your child needs to use a phone, he/she may use the school phone with permission from his/her classroom teacher. Inappropriate use of a cell phone will result in confiscation by school personnel.

Reminders: Please be sure to sign and return the acknowledgement form found in the center of the Code of Student Conduct as soon as possible. Also, please return enrollment cards no later than Friday if you have not already done so. Be sure the card is completely filled out, including a neighbor or relative to contact in case of emergency, and a doctor's name and number. If you do not have a pediatrician or family doctor, please tell us where you would take your child in a medical emergency.

For more information, please refer to the parent/student handbook.

We look forward to a great third grade year with your child. Please sign the form below to indicate you have received this letter and reviewed it with your child.

Sincerely yours,

Lea Melville and Jamie Sawyer

Scholastic Book Orders

On September 3rd, Ms. Melville and I will be sending home our first Scholastic book orders. When you order it helps us earn points so we can buy more books for the classroom.

Books make great gifts and help spur the imagination of your child. So order away!!

I will be setting my account up online this year where you can go in to look at the catalogs online and make your orders using a credit card. If you choose you may also send me the paper back with a check made out to scholastic books and I can make the order for you.

So please be looking for this in your Wednesday folder on September 3rd. Thanks.

Mrs. Sawyer

About your Child

This will be coming home with your child on Monday, August 25th. Please use the index card we provided or you may type a response or email me. Thanks.

Dear Parents,

We are writing to ask your help in becoming partners with us in your child's education. We will have only a short time to be a part of your child's journey through life - just one fleeting school year - but we want to make a contribution that lasts a lifetime.

We know that our teaching must begin with making your child feel at home in our classrooms. We want to help the children come together into a learning community made up of particular, unique individuals, each with his/her own learning style, interests, history, and hopes. Would you help us teach well by taking a quiet moment to write us about your child? What is your youngster like? What are the things you, as a parent, know that would be important for us to know? What are your child's interests? We want to know how your child thinks and plays and how you see your child as a learner and as a person.

Thanks! As partners with you, we will work together to ensure that your child has a happy, successful year in third grade.

Sincerely,

Ms. Melville and Mrs. Sawyer

The zoo at my house

Figgy playing in a bag of markers & Tracy looking adorable

Princess laying on the ottoman & Duke is hanging out with Puma

Buckles playing with a toy& Sammy loves empty boxes

Frances sticking out her tongue & Drexler looking cute

I have a lot of animals. Let me start in order of when I got them.

I got Drexler in December of 1996, she was our third cat (the two before have recently passed away). She was so cute, I got her from another worker at my job. She's is my bed buddy, she lays on my pillow with me everynight. She is areally old now, so I have to treat her very gently. Drexler was named after Clyde Drexler from the Houston Rockets. At the time the Rockets had just won their 2nd championship, so I was naming all my cats after the team. Drexler loves human food, everything from funyuns to jack in the box tacos. She is not a picky eater.

In October of 1999, came Buckles (a beagle). My husband brought him home for a trial run and Buckles never left. He was 10 months old when we got him, and his ears were bigger than the rest of his body. Right after we got him, I was walking him one morning and I fell and broke my ankle, of course I blamed the dog. It took me a long time to fall in love with him, which is hard to believe, because he is absolutely adorable. Now Buckles is the king of our home, he sleep son the bed, couch, kitchen table, and anywhere else he pleases. Buckles is very good with all the cats, not so much with Duke our rabbit. I guess his natural hunting skills kick in and he can't stop chasing him.

In 2002 we got Duke, the rabbit. My husband actually brought Duke home from a co-worker who just had a baby and decided he couldn't take care of the rabbit anymore. I had never taken care of a rabbit, so this was a new experience for me. Duke loves attention and does respond to his name. He loves being taken out of his cage and having free time with the cats. The cats and him wil curl up, it is the sweetest thing. I love feeding Duke vegetables and fruit, he is always excited with these treats. I have to say I think Duke had it the best when we evacuated for Hurricane Rita, because he got to stay in his cage the whole trip.

Frances and Princess came in about the same time in 2000. We were living in a second floor apartment and these two cats just took over our front door area and our staircase. I would come home and they were there everyday. I would feed them, but it took about 8 months before I could play with them. My husband said no more animals at that time since we had three cats and a dog. But one day he was driving and saw a cat get run over by our place. He decided right then, I could bring them because he didn't want to to see anything happen to them. So I was able to catch Princess first and she came in. Then a few weeks later I caught Frances and she joined our family.

In 2002 came Taylor. My husband and I were doing our walk around the apartment complex one Sunday when this gray cat just jumped in my arms. I brought her home and we kept her. She is so cool, she looks like a russian blue. She will get on me when I am in the tub, she isn't afraid of anything. But she can be mean also, if you touch her wrong, you will be covered in scratches. Most of my scratches are from her.

In 2003 was Sammy. I found him in the apartment complex, because he would follow Buckles everytime we took our walk. I finally went back that December and just picked him up, I am not sure he was actually a stray but he had no collar and no one ever put any signs up for him. Sammy is a very vocal cat who loves shoes. I have to make sure to never leave my shoes out because he has ruined a lot of mine. He gets along really well with Buckles, they are very good friends.

In 2005 my husband and I moved into a townhome and as soon as we moved in we saw Tracy. I fell in love with him, he was so beautiful. But I couldn't catch him. I left food out and one day I put some on our patio. Tracy turned around for a moment and I just grabbed him and brought him into the house. We took him to the vet and he was a healthy kitten, so of course we kept him. Tracy is scared of his own shadow, he really doesn't like my husband or dog for some reason. When I am home alone Tracy spends a lot of time with me, but otherwise I really don't see him.

In October 2006 was Puma. My husband was at a job off of 45, when someone said I have a cat I caught in this box do you want it. He was like what are you going to do with it, if I don't take it? The worker said I am putting back on the street. My husband was worried because it was so close to the freeway, so without even looking at the cat he put the box in his car, finished the job and headed home. About halfway home he called to tell me about this cat and decided he better look at, if he was bringing it home. He opened the box to find this little 2.5 pound torti cat. We took her to the vet that afternoon. She was too young for shots. We brought her home and isolated her, but we did introduce her to Tracy. A few week later we noticed she was losing her hair, so we took her back to the vet and she had scabies, so we took care of that. Then she started getting sore in her mouth and paws, which require shots. She still gets them because she has an immunedefiencey disorder that causes them. Puma is so sweet, and still small, she weighs about 6 pounds. She is my dainty little flower, she loves to sneak on the bed when I am sleeping (at least that is what my husband tells me).

Lastly is Figaro (Figgy), who joined us this May of 2007. My husband was on the Aggie boards and saw a post for a cat. This cat was on death row, because it had not been adopted. There were people willing to pay for the adoption but they didn't want the cat. The cat was in the Huntsville shelter. My husband asked if we could get another cat, he really wanted to save this one. So that next Saturday we drove to Huntsville to pick up Figgy. I have to say this is the most awesome cat I have ever had. Figgy is so chilled and just blended right in, no shyness with the cats or the dog, not even the rabbit. It was like Figgy just belonged here.

As you can tell I love animals, I always want to save them and offer a good home. Right now I am watching a stray orange cat that is outside our place. I feed it and play with it, but it may joining our home shortly. I have always wanted an orange cat.
